Vessel Tracking

Vessel Monitoring / Tracking Applications

Beam Communications has developed a range of Vessel monitoring terminals to support various applications and market requirements. The Beam Terminals give you the option of integrating a tracking device either as a stand-alone data tracking terminal or an integrated solution with Voice and Data capabilities.

Multi Use Applications

The capabilities to incorporate tracking and monitoring with a integrated Crew Calling solution is an ideal mechanism for getting added value out of the installation and capital investment. The voice and data solution allow for both standard voice calling from intelligent type peripherals or standard phone equipment when integrated with the Beam Remote Satellite Terminal.

Vessel Tracking

Utilising the Intelligent Beam TrackALERT interface terminals it is very easy to implement a vessel tracking solution for your fleet. The delivery of messages can be easily sent via Short Burst Data, SBD, Short Message Service. The delivery of messages can be either preset to a periodic timing as required or can be remotely activated and deactivated for specific periods of time. Alternatively the vessel can be polled at any time via SMS or SBD requesting a current position report.

The Vessel monitoring module is included in the firmware of the Ship Security Alert System, SSAS and can be used simultaneously in conjunction with the SSAS operation.

The Intelligent range of Beam TrackALERT, Alert and Monitoring interfaces provides you with the flexibility to use an inbuilt GPS engine as is the case on the TrackALERT, RST030 range or the External GPS on the RST035 range. Both terminals provide input for two GPS inputs either from an external antenna or the ships NMEA feed. Priority can be set on the desired GPs input and then the terminal will automatically revert to the back up input.

Global Tracking

The Iridium Satellite network provides a robust network for supporting a vessel monitoring applications, with global coverage from pole to pole and the use of low powered antennas that are omni directional this makes a Beam TrackALERT system your desired installation.

Market Applications Include:

Oil tankers, Chemical tankers, Bulk carriers, High-speed cargo, Passenger ships, Passenger Ships, Gas carriers, fishing vessels, recreational vessels.

Tracking Reporting Options

There are several options available for using the tracking functionality of the TrackALERT unit. This includes the ability to preset the reporting to be sent at a predetermined periodic interval from X minutes up to every 244 Hours.

Another option is to use polling, this is where it is possible to send the terminal an SMS or SBD command and poll it for its current location and or status.

In the event of tracking for emergency situations it is possible to program the TrackALERT to send tracking reports only under Alarm/Alert conditions, the alarm may have been raised either automatically by a digital input or from a physical press of a button.

A key feature of the TrackALERT systems also enables the use of movement
detection. When this setting is turned on, it the TrackALERT will only send tracking messages once the terminal has moved greater than a preset X degree. This is ideal for effectively managing costs of tracking data when not required. Even with this setting active it is still possible to POLL the vehicle at anytime for its location.

GPS Input options

The Intelligent range of Beam TrackALERT, Alert and Monitoring interfaces provides you with the flexibility to use an inbuilt GPS engine as is the case on the TrackALERT, RST030 range or the External GPS on the RST035 range. Both terminals provide input for two GPS signals either from an external antenna or any other external NMEA feed that may be available form another device. Priority can be set on the desired GPs input and then the terminal will automatically revert to the back up input.

Configurable Fields

TrackALERT terminals provide a great deal of flexibility for configuring selected information to be sent with each tracking and or alert message. There are free text fields that enable specific company/personal information, identification tags, origin country, registration numbers and the like. It is also possible to select the level of detail required such as speed, height, direction, digital input status etc.

Local/Remote Configuration

The Intelligent processor inside the TrackALERT interface enables the terminal to be configured remotely or locally. Locally it can be simply configured with a PC using the Beam Management System,(BMS) software, supplied with the TrackALERT terminal.

Whilst using the BMS is the most simple, it is also possible to configure most of the fields by sending commands to the terminal using either SMS or SBD.

Connection of Other Equipment/Devices

Beam terminals will support the connection of a third party device through the DB9 Data connection, enabling Data Loggers, Meter Readers and other terminal devices to be easily connected to Satellite Communications. Beam terminals generally supports engine management type monitoring devices to enable communication through the satellite network via SMS, SBD or circuit switched data.

Remote Diagnostics

Using SMS or SBD with the intelligence built into the Beam RST100 and RST200 terminals it is possible to remotely configure the communication terminal as well, run diagnostic checks, check signal strength, temperature and call logs as well as the ability to have automated reporting for “still alive” reporting if required. It is also possible to perform some simple polling of a device plugged into the Log Port of the terminal. This can be a very cost effective means of low-level position and condition reporting.

Global Coverage

The Iridium Satellite network provides a robust network for supporting a global tracking application, with global coverage from pole to pole and the use of low powered antennas that are omni directional this makes a Beam TrackALERT system your desired installation for any application.

Data Services

All Beam terminals support all of the Iridium Data services available. This then provides a flexible means by which to communicate using one or more of the following protocols; Circuit Switched Data, Short Message Service, Direct Internet and Short Burst Data.

Voice Services

Whilst all data services are available on any Beam device, selected Beam terminals offer varying voice service features. Any voice supported terminal will allow the use of an Intelligent Handset, however the Beam Remote Satellite Terminal, RST100, allows the use of standard phone equipment through its intelligent RJ11 connectivity. This means that standard cordless, corded or PBX systems can be integrated for voice communications on this terminal.

Intelligent Handset

The Beam Intelligent Handset, RST970, is an ideal accessory for voice and SMS communications. The handset is compact, lightweight, easy to install and comes complete with hang-up cup and mounting brackets. The handset has a built in ringer, supports full SMS functionality as well as an easy menu system to access phone settings. The Intelligent handset is included in an In-Vehicle Telephone Kit as well as the Beam RST973 In-vehicle accessory kit.

Head Office Communications
In order to reduce call costs to and from head office to vehicles it is advisable to integrate an RST100 as part of a complete solution. The RST100 enables voice calls to be integrated with a PBX system, that will allow for a reduced call rate for Iridium to Iridium calls.
Antenna Selection
Whilst the installation and integration to the terminal is very straight forward, selecting the appropriate antenna and antenna cable for the installation is also important to ensure greatest call quality over the satellite network. There is a range of suitable antenna installation types for various applications. In order to maximize the signal penetration in some locations the antenna can be installed some distances away from the main terminal in a more appropriate location.

The maximum loss for an antenna cable installed to any Iridium device is 3db maximum. Exceeding this loss will affect reliability and call quality.
