Telemetry

Telemetry / Data Applications

With the growing demand for remote telemetry applications including; remote monitoring, data transfer/retrieval and remote configuration Beam has developed a range of Satellite Terminals and accessories to meet a broad range of applications for various markets.

With the integration of a Beam satellite terminal you can have access to seamless communications using circuit switched data, SMS or Short Burst Data services on the Iridium network. The Beam communication equipment can be easily accommodated into your existing infrastructure or for new deployments as a primary means of telemetry communications.

Market Applications

Beam terminals can be deployed in a broad range of telemetry applications including;

- Meter Reading
- Data Interchange
- Utility Management
- Data Transfer
- Remote control / Configuration
- Monitoring of equipment
- Alarm monitoring / alerting functionality
- Post even diagnostics
- Routine maintenance of equipment

Modem Interface:

The Beam satellite terminals provide a Hayes compatible modem interface and support an extensive AT command set to either accommodate integration into your existing infrastructure or to operate as a stand-alone terminal.

Terminal Devices:

There is a wide range of Beam satellite communication terminals that can be deployed into various installations to meet individual requirements. These range from basic Data only device for simple remote data transmission to or from a remote location through to intelligent voice and data modules that can be integrated into fixed sites offering a stand-alone VPN to the remote location with the convenience of voice communications integrated to a PBX if required.

Data Services

All Beam terminals support all of the Iridium Data services available. This then provides a flexible means by which to communicate using one or more of the following protocols; Circuit Switched Data, Short Message Service, Direct Internet and Short Burst Data.

Data Communication Options:

Circuit Switched Data:

Using the Beam terminal in any location a mobile originated data call can be made in order to establish a circuit switched data call. The data call originated on the Beam terminal can easily be terminated on another Beam terminal or PSTN infrastructure for gaining accesses to corporate LAN or your own Internet provider. There are significant cost savings for originating an Iridium call form a Beam terminal as compared to the PSTN.

Short Burst Data:

The Beam terminals can support both mobile originated and mobile terminated Short Burst Data messages. Short burst data is ideal for applications where there is a high frequency of small packet of data being sent to and or from a remote locations.

Short Message Service:

The Beam terminals can support both mobile originated and mobile SMS messaging. The SMS service supports 160 characters per message and can be easily delivered to another Iridium service, an email address or an alternate terrestrial service as available from some providers.

Data Compatibility

All beam terminals support a common Hayes Compatible Modem interface for data connectivity. The AT command set for the terminals also allows for flexible integration to various applications and equipment types.

Global Coverage

The Iridium Satellite network provides a robust network for supporting a global tracking application, with global coverage from pole to pole and the use of low powered antennas that are omni directional this makes a Beam TrackALERT system your desired installation for any application.

Voice Services

Whilst all data services are available on any Beam device, selected Beam terminals offer varying voice service features. Any voice supported terminal will allow the use of an Intelligent Handset, however the Beam Remote Satellite Terminal, RST100, allows the use of standard phone equipment through its intelligent RJ11 connectivity. This means that standard cordless, corded or PBX systems can be integrated for voice communications on this terminal.

TrackALERT Interface:

The Beam TrackALERT terminals are an intelligent Alert / Tracking and Monitoring unit all in one and are available for all Beam communication terminals. TrackALERT allows the deployment of various applications, including vehicle, asset, and or asset tracking, monitoring and condition reporting as well as remote control and configuration. Alert/Alarm monitoring applications can also be simply deployed.

For detailed information on the Beam TrackALERT terminals see TrackALERT brochure for detailed information.

Power Input

The Beam terminals support 11-32V DC power input. An AC plug-pack is supplied with all terminals, which therefore makes it very easy to connect to mains or DC power. The use of an RST050 Beam Battery Back-up is also an ideal accessory where communication needs to be guaranteed.

Connection of Other Equipment/Devices

Beam terminals will support the connection of a third party device through the DB9 Data connection, enabling Data Loggers, Meter Readers and other terminal devices to be easily connected to Satellite Communications. Beam terminals generally supports engine management type monitoring devices to enable communication through the satellite network via SMS, SBD or circuit switched data.

Remote Diagnostics

Using SMS or SBD with the intelligence built into the Beam RST100 and RST200 terminals it is possible to remotely configure the communication terminal as well, run diagnostic checks, check signal strength, temperature and call logs as well as the ability to have automated reporting for “still alive” reporting if required. It is also possible to perform some simple polling of a device plugged into the Log Port of the terminal. This can be a very cost effective means of low-level position and condition reporting.

Antenna Selection

Whilst the installation and integration to the terminal is very straight forward, selecting the appropriate antenna and antenna cable for the installation is also important to ensure greatest call quality over the satellite network. There is a range of suitable antenna installation types for various applications. In order to maximize the signal penetration in some locations the antenna can be installed some distances away from the main terminal in a more appropriate location.

The maximum loss for an antenna cable installed to any Iridium device is 3db maximum. Exceeding this loss will affect reliability and call quality.

Typical Installation

Power Requirements:

For many remote deployments the power consumption of remote terminal devices is very important. The Beam terminals provide flexibility for the integration of the Beam Battery Backup or the use of Solar implementations where required. Most of the terminals cater for a n 11-32V Dc input to cater for a wide range of installation requirements and power management ability.

Environmental Conditions:

The Beam terminals are approved for use in harsh environmental conditions selected terminals has full compliance for extreme heat, cold, humidity, corrosion and vibration to provide peace of mind for specific applications. This certification also covers the Beam Battery Back up terminal.

Installations:

Various installation options can be deployed in the remote site as well as the head office location. The benefit of a head office installation is for reduced Iridium to Iridium data call costs.
